Senior Database Administrator (PostgreSQL / AWS RDS)

Job Summary
We are seeking a highly experienced Senior Database Administrator (DBA) to manage, monitor, optimize, and evolve our PostgreSQL database environments. This role is responsible for supporting high‑load on‑premises PostgreSQL systems as well as AWS RDS PostgreSQL deployments.
The ideal candidate will bring deep expertise in query performance tuning, database version upgrades, and cloud database operations, with a proven ability to plan, test, and execute PostgreSQL upgrades and migrations while ensuring application compatibility, data integrity, and system stability.
Key Responsibilities
PostgreSQL Administration (On‑Premise & Cloud)
Monitor, analyze, and tune heavy and long‑running SQL queries across PostgreSQL environments
Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks using PostgreSQL statistics, logs, and system metrics
Optimize database performance through:
Index design and optimization
Query analysis and rewriting
PostgreSQL configuration tuning (memory, vacuum, autovacuum, checkpoints)
Detect and propose data archival mechanism for unused data
Ensure database availability, reliability, and data integrity
Manage backup, restore, and disaster recovery strategies
Database Version Upgrades & Compatibility Testing
Lead and execute PostgreSQL database version upgrades in on‑premises and AWS RDS environments
Perform pre‑upgrade assessments to identify:
Deprecated features and breaking changes
Extension, stored procedure, and function compatibility issues
Query behavior and performance changes between versions
Design and execute comprehensive upgrade testing plans to ensure:
Stored procedures, functions, triggers, and views remain compatible
Existing SQL queries execute correctly and efficiently
Applications function as expected on the upgraded database version
Validate data integrity, performance, and stability post‑upgrade
AWS RDS PostgreSQL & Cloud Operations
Design, provision, and manage AWS RDS PostgreSQL instances
Spin up and configure RDS environments following best practices for:
Security and access control
Performance tuning and scalability
High availability, backups, and snapshots
Monitor RDS performance using AWS and PostgreSQL monitoring tools
Partner with DevOps and infrastructure teams on cloud database architecture
Database Migration & Modernization
Lead and support database migrations between on‑premises PostgreSQL and AWS RDS
Plan and execute migrations with minimal downtime and risk
Perform data validation and performance testing after migration
Provide strategic recommendations for PostgreSQL modernization, architecture improvements, and version adoption
DevOps & Automation
Apply DevOps principles to database operations
Automate database provisioning, configuration, monitoring, and maintenance
Support CI/CD pipelines involving database schema and data changes
Use scripting and infrastructure‑as‑code approaches to improve operational efficiency
Required Qualifications
Minimum 7 years of experience as a Database Administrator, with strong focus on PostgreSQL
Deep hands‑on knowledge of PostgreSQL internals, performance tuning, and query optimization
Proven experience planning and executing PostgreSQL version upgrades, including:
Compatibility testing of stored procedures, functions, and SQL queries
Managing risks, rollback plans, and production cutovers
Strong experience managing AWS RDS PostgreSQL environments
Solid understanding of Linux/Unix operating systems
Experience working with DevOps tools, automation, and modern infrastructure practices
Excellent troubleshooting, analytical, and problem‑solving skills
Experience supporting large‑scale or high‑traffic PostgreSQL environments
Strong communication and technical documentation skills
Ability to work independently and take ownership of complex database platforms
Comfortable collaborating with application, DevOps, and infrastructure teams
Proactive, improvement‑driven mindset focused on performance, stability, and scalability
Familiarity with PostgreSQL monitoring and diagnostic tools
Knowledge of high‑availability, replication, and failover strategies
Experience with AWS services such as VPC, IAM, EC2, and S3
Scripting skills (Bash, Python, or similar)
